Martyna Miller is a Polish artist, researcher, anthropologist, and community worker. Her projects are marked by precision, an insistent intensity, and a quiet gentleness at the same time. She works in long-term and cyclical processes, aiming to connect the private with the public – or better yet, with the shared.
One such projects is called The Lack of Forest. Since 2018, Martyna has been the caretaker of a heap of roots – an artefact that remained after a hurricane swept through the forests of the Bory Tucholskie (Tuchola Forest) near her place of living. She made sure this heap would stay in place until it naturally decomposes, as a remembrance of both a natural and a social catastrophe. The project creates a shared space for the residents of nearby villages, offering them an opportunity to grieve together, reflect on their own and nature’s wounds, and support and connect with one another.
At ssesi.space, Martyna presents six years of this work condensed into an exhibition accompanied by a performative and participatory program.
This event was supported by Brno city council and Czech Ministry of Culture.
