“From Within The Lack of Forest” is a solo exhibition by an interdisciplinary artist and Doctor of Fine Arts, based in Charzykowy since 2018, takes its title from the areas affected by the devastating hurricane of 2017. The exhibition presents video works, sound, ceramics, and installations drawn from an evolving archive developed as part of the artist’s long-term project in the region known as “The Lack of Forest.”

Since 2018, Martyna Miller has been engaged in an artistic and research-based process focused on the post-storm landscapes of the Tuchola Forest. Her work spans documentation and performative interventions in the altered environment, as well as educational activities with local communities, collaborative initiatives, and explorations of forest regeneration and the redesign of landscapes shaped by natural disaster.
Since 2020, the artist has been caring for the Mound sculpture – a mound of 120 uprooted tree roots preserved at the epicenter of the storm, near Suszek and Lake Śpierewnik. Initiated by the artist in collaboration with the Rytel Forest District, the sculpture has been intentionally left to natural processes of decay and overgrowth.
Since 2022, Kopiec has become a site for gatherings and artistic-educational activities focused on environmental awareness and the observation of regenerative processes within the recovering landscape. Materially, it embodies transformation – a catalyst for cycles of decay and renewal, an object that fills the void left by the vanished forest while anticipating the emergence of a new one.
The exhibition serves as an attempt to summarize and reveal the work carried out in Brak Lasu, both on a personal and collective level. It poses questions about the nature of post-catastrophic space, the reach of memory into the past, and the extent to which such landscapes project the future. It also asks a fundamental question: what is a forest?

This was the artist’s first exhibition in the region.

The opening of the exhibition was accompanied by a multimedia narrative by Martyna Miller, created with invited guests and presented in the auditorium of the Chojnice Cultural Centre.

On April 27 at 1:00 PM, a performative event took place alongside the exhibition, followed by a collective planting of mullein near the Mound eco-monument in The Lack of Forest.
